5 in 13 Licence Revalidation

The CAA is considering removing the option to revalidate a pilot licence via the 5-in-13 route.

This system requires 5 hours of flight experience within the preceeding 13 months and no biennial flight with an instructor. It was available to pilots who gained their licence before 2008 when the NPPL system was fully introduced.

The Air Navigation Order (ANO) requires pilots to revalidate via a 12 hour in 24 month system and the 5-in-13 is only permitted thanks to an exemption to the ANO. This exemption (ORS4 1582) is available here and will expire on 30 September 2025.

The CAA is proposing not to renew the exemption, meaning all pilots will have to revalidate via a 12-in-24 with a biennial flight with an instructor.

Those affected by the change should have been contacted directly by the CAA for consultation. If you think you are affected and have not been contacted by the CAA, please get in touch with the BMAA office.
