WOW. That’s the only reasonable response to the quality of photos this time, with a handful of entries which could easily have won the competition any other month.

It may have made our job picking a winner even harder, but we’re hardly complaining, so keep them coming.

What’s even more remarkable is that it’s the middle of winter, with most of the UK colder than a penguin’s bottom for most of early January.

Hero of the month award, therefore, goes to St Michael’s flexwing pilot Frank Smith, who spent an hour freezing his unmentionables off over the snowy wastes in a venerable F2a. Frank, we salute you. Now get back to the clubhouse and get the kettle on, you madman.

Solstice by Ian Crow. No, not the winter one, but Ian over the Kent coast in a C42 out of Linton airfield near Headcorn<br> at 4.52am on last year’s summer solstice. “There’s nothing like being airborne at that time of the morning,” he said.

Spiral over Bala Lake by Daniel Langton. Daniel takes his GT450 down to have a closer look at the <br>mist-shrouded Welsh hills not far from Bala Lake on a flight from Hawskview in Cheshire.

The Empire Strikes Back by Deepak Mahajan. It may look like a scene from Star Wars, but it’s actually Deepak <br>over London in the Pipistrel Alpha after being given a zone transit by Heathrow on his way home to Damyns Hall.

Water, water everywhere by Simon Gregory. “The first flight of the year, to find Gloucester encircled by flood water,” said Simon, <br>who was in a nice dry C42. “That flooding is right on the edge of the ATZ and goes on for miles.”

Wet wet wet by Frank Smith. “The January snow all melted away except on the many areas of flooding <br>around St Michael’s, leaving some arty designs on the snow. One hour was enough in the F2a at that temperature,” said Frank.
