Belt Up Safety Campaign - Spring 2023

I think few would disagree that a wearing a seatbelt in a car can significantly reduce the chance of serious injury in the event of a crash. So, it is important to remember that the same is true for an aircraft.

Of course, it very much depends upon the position and speed of the aircraft on impact, the forces experienced, and a multitude of other factors, but when reviewing AAIB accident investigation reports, the repetition of phrases like ‘ ….the pilot, who was wearing a full harness, escaped uninjured….’ cannot be ignored.

The careful inspection of the condition of aircraft harnesses along with correct fitting could help to save lives and reduce the chances of serious injury, and this is why the BMAA has launched the ‘Belt-up’ safety campaign for this spring. During the month of May, we shall be highlighting the importance of wearing a harness and promoting this message via our webpage, Facebook, YouTube, email and in Microlight Flying magazine. It is our hope that it will help to persuade pilots to think twice before going flying without a correctly fitting harness.
