Why register?

There are a number of areas on the website that allow you to enter data, such as the events page which allows you to create and amend details of an event or fly-in, or the Classifieds page which allows you to enter details of items you wish to buy or sell.

Before you use these areas, we must know who you are. This is primarily to avoid frivolous data entry that is unrelated to the BMAA. Often spam companies use utilities such as these to advertise their products. You have probably already received many emails advertising Viagra or Cialis, and it is this type of spam that we are trying to avoid.

How to register

From the Login page, click the register link which will take you to the new registration page.

Please note that you do not need to re-register if you have forgotten your username or password. Instead use the Forgot username/password link on the Login page.

You will have to fill out the following information

New User Registration

* Full name

* Email Address

* Login Name

* Password

BMAA Number

Receive Email notification of new Events & Competitions?

(Fields marked * are mandatory)

The items marked with a * mean that they must be entered. A description of each item is given below

Fullname– Enter your full name (e.g. John Smith)

Email address– Enter your email address. Note it is very important that you double check that your email address has been entered correctly, as we will be sending you an email to verify your login. A mistyped email address is one of the most common reasons why members have problems registering.

Login name– This is the name by which you will be known on the website, and can be your name or nickname or anything you want really! (e.g. JohnnyBoy, superflyer, Microlight Jim etc)

Password– This is the password you will use everytime you login to the website.

BMAA Number– Your BMAA membership number

Receive Email notification of new Events & Competitions?– If you tick this box, it means that you will receive an email to notify you of an event or competition that has just been added. That way you can keep up to date on what is happening and when. If you untick the box, you will not receive any emails regarding new events. You can however visit the events page of the BMAA website to keep up to date.

Possible errors you may see when you click Register

The value in the fireld {Fullname/Email address/Login name/Password} is required– If any of the mandatory boxes are not filled in, this error will appear.

Please enter an email address in the format person@domain – If the email address does not contain an @ symbol, this error will appear

The value in field Email Address is already in database – If the email address entered has already been used by another registration, this error will appear.

The value in field Login Name is already in database database – If the login name entered has already been used by another registration, this error will appear.

The verification email – Why it is needed

When you click the Register button on the registration screen, we will immediately send you an email, which contains a link which you can click to verify your registration.

Why do we need to do this?

There are two reasons

  1. There are an increasing number of automatic spam programs that act as if they are a real person by completing the registration page automatically, and then once registered, they can use the event and classified pages to post irrelevant adverts to promote whatever it is they are selling, usually pharmaceuticals or porn. By sending an email containing a link that you click to verify, we stop these programs from working
  2. Identity theft. We want to ensure that you are who you say you are! If we didn’t send you the email, there would be nothing to stop someone who knows your email address registering falsely using your credentials and creating advertisements and events under your name. If someone tried to do this, you would receive the email, not them, and thus they wouldn’t be able to register

The verification email – How it works

When you receive the verification email it will contain a link which you can click to verify your registration. When you click the link, it will bring you to the BMAA website to a page which confirms your registration.

You can now login using your username and password, and create events, classified ads etc

Do not receive the verification email?

This is probably the most common issue members have when trying to register with the site.  There are a number of possible reasons why you didn’t receive the verification email

1.      You mistyped your email address. Believe it or not, this is the most common reason members do not receive the verification email, because it was sent to some other address!

To check this, go to the login page (Click the Guest link in the top right of the BMAA home page) and login using the original login name and password you supplied. You can then check the email address you entered and you can change it if necessary and re-submit your registration.

2.      Your email system has a spam or junk filter in place which has caused  the email to be put into a spam/junk folder. Often email systems automatically mark any email sent from a website as spam. Check the folder where spam/junk email gets sent to see if the verification email is there. Also check that there are no rules I place which delete spam/junk mail.

3.      There is a problem with your email system that is causing the verification email not to be delivered.

Remember that email is not a guaranteed, instant messaging system. Internet problems can sometimes delay the delivery of mail. However, in the normal course of events you should receive the email within no more than five minutes of registering.

Important note: If you contact our support desk regarding the issue of not receiving the verification email, you will be directed back to this page, as unfortunately there is nothing we can do other than suggest the above three reasons why you have not received it.

Verification code invalid?

When you register, you will receive an email containing a link that you must click to complete the registration process. A common problem is that on clicking the link you see a message stating that the Verification Code is invalid. This happens when you have submitted more than one registration for the same email. Every time a subsequent email is sent out, it invalidates all previous emails, so if you click a link in any email other than the latest one you received, you will get this message.

Don’t want to receive Event notification emails?

Remember that it was your choice to receive them! However, you can turn this option off by logging in to the BMAA website and then clicking on your username in the top right corner of the screen. This will bring you to a page where you can edit and save details about your registration.

The Login Page just repeats, so you cannot Login
